Multiphysics Modeling and Simulation of Space Charge Effects in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPC)
This talk presents the development of a high-performance numerical solver designed to simulate the complex interaction between space charge distributions and electric fields in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) detectors. LArTPCs are the primary technology for next-generation neutrino experiments, relying on highly purified liquid argon and strong electric fields to reconstruct particle trajectories. While electrons created by ionization are quickly collected at the anode, the resulting positive argon ions drift significantly slower—at speeds comparable to the bulk fluid flow.

For surface-level detectors like ProtoDUNE-SP, the constant influx of cosmic rays leads to a significant accumulation of these positive ions. This "space charge" creates substantial distortions in the nominal electric field, leading to spatial and temporal offsets in reconstructed particle tracks and affecting electron-ion recombination rates. To address this, we have developed a coupled numerical framework: the ion transport equation is solved using a time-accurate, cell-centered Finite Volume Method (FVM), while the electric potential is calculated via a continuous Finite Element Method (FEM).

The solver accounts for the dynamic coupling where the electric field dictates ion drift velocity, and the resulting space charge density serves as a source term for the potential equation. Our implementation is parallelized using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) for high-performance scalability. Furthermore, we will address a custom-developed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package to incorporate realistic background flow velocities into the convective transport. We will discuss the verification of this solver and its implications for improving the calibration and physics reach of large-scale LArTPC detectors.

Motivated by Hanson and Toft’s conjecture, we study the minimum number of edges over all (H1, . . . , Hr)-co-critical graphs on n vertices. Gussow is a professor of English at the University of Mississippi and a professional blues harmonica player and teacher. The author of many books on the blues, including Mister Satan’s Apprentice: A Blues Memoir and Beyond the Crossroads: The Devil and the Blues Tradition, he earned an AB and PhD from Princeton and an MA from Columbia. Satan & Adam, a 2018 documentary about his thirty-year, Harlem-based partnership with bluesman Sterling “Mr. Satan” Magee, screened on Netflix for several years.

Through thoughtful dialogue and solution-driven conversations, participants will examine how media, technology and public perception intersect — and what it will take to rebuild credibility and strengthen the role of a free press in civic life.

Adam Kinzinger, from Illinois, who served six terms in the House, was one of only two Republicans on the January 6th Committee. He is the founder of the Country First movement with 100,000+ members.

Democrat Joseph Kennedy III of Massachusetts, served eight years in the House and subsequently was appointed U.S. special envoy for Northern Ireland. He is one of the founders of the Groundwork Project, which does advocacy work in Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma and West Virginia.

Other speakers and panelists scheduled for the April 17 conference include: Brian Stelter, CNN’s chief media analyst; Chris R. Vaccaro, the national president of the Society of Journalists; Clayton Weimers, executive director of RSF USA; Rufus Friday, executive director of the Center for Integrity in News Reporting and the former publisher of the Lexington Herald-Leader; Graeme Joffee, investigative sports journalist; Professor Kathy Kiely of the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri; Ellen McCarthy, the founder/CEO of the Trust in Media Cooperative and a former U.S. assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research; André Natta, executive director of the Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism; Wesley Muller, a staff writer at the Louisiana Illuminator and a former U.S. Army paratrooper; Vivian Walker, co-president of the Public Diplomacy Council of America, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and former executive director of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy.

European Classical Music and “Occidentalism” in Japanese Anime Soundtracks

Western classical music has long played a prominent role in Japanese anime soundtracks, elevating key moments in popular series from Sailor Moon to Fullmetal Alchemist. This talk examines how the use of classical music in anime exists within a long history of Japanese reception of Western art music, dating back to Japan’s 're-opening' to the world in the mid-19th century. It also explores how the use of Western classical music coincides with a longstanding fascination in Japanese anime and manga with European history and culture, including engaging in a sort of reverse-exoticism - or 'occidentalism’ - in how anime portrays the fantasy/sci-fi counterparts of countries like Britain, France, and Germany.

Please join Flagship First-Gen, the First-Gen Student Network, UM School of Law, and UM Graduate School as we celebrate the First-Gen Evening of Excellence. This event will recognize and celebrate the achievements of graduating First-Gen students at the University of Mississippi. First-Gen Students are those whose parents or primary guardian have not earned a bachelor's degree. This designation also includes students who are the first in their families to graduate with advanced degrees such as a Juris Doctorate, PhD, EdD, Doctor of Arts, or Specialist degree.

Students will receive recognition on Monday, April 27, 2026, which will take place in the Student Union Ballroom at 5:30 PM.

The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics will host a program with the Freedom Forum on Wednesday, April 29. The program, “Free Speech and Free Press: From National Trends to Ole Miss,” will examine public awareness and support for First Amendment freedoms, with a particular eye on how speech is viewed on college campuses, as well as the real-world challenges and opportunities facing journalists today.

The Overby Center was founded in 2007 with a $5 million grant from the Freedom Forum. Al Neuharth (1924-2013), a lifelong journalist and First Amendment advocate, founded the Freedom Forum, a nonpartisan foundation that champions the First Amendment as a cornerstone of democracy, on July 4, 1991. He was also the founder of USA TODAY. The Overby Center continues as an affiliate of the Freedom Forum with a strong emphasis on the First Amendment.

The mission of Safe Sitter® is to provide training to all youth in order to build safer communities. Course content includes:

Safety: Indoor, outdoor, online, and personal safety.Childcare: Child development, routines (including diapering practice), and behavior management.First Aid & Rescue: Injury prevention, injury management, and choking rescue.Life & Business: Screening jobs, setting fees, and greeting employers.
Each participant will receive a workbook. Parents should enter with their child to sign in and plan to return by 3:15 p.m. for a short graduation ceremony.

Please Note: This class is intended for ages 11 to 14 and students should bring a sack lunch. A CPR certification is not included as part of this class but a training with certification is provided on May 16 that participants in 7th grade or higher may attend.

The Move Out Donation Drive at the University of Mississippi is a community-driven initiative aimed at collecting essential items from students during the move-out season to benefit the local community. Through this drive, students are encouraged to donate gently used clothing, furniture, electronics, and other dormitory items they no longer need. These donations are then distributed to those in the local community, helping to support individuals and families while reducing waste. The Move Out Donation Drive promotes sustainability and community engagement among students.

Goal: Enhance community support and environmental sustainability by collecting and redistributing gently used items from students during the move-out season, thereby reducing waste and aiding the local community.

Objectives:

Increase Participation – Achieve an increase in volunteer participation and/or university partnerships each year until saturation is reached. Maximize Donation Efficiency – collect and distribute the maximum amount of donations without compromising the labor capacity of participating employees or volunteers. Strengthen Community Partnerships – Maintain and establish new community partnerships each year by providing a consistent and reliable resource.

The General Studies ceremony requires a printed ticket for guests ages 3 and older to enter the Ford Center. Each graduate can request up to six (6) guest tickets. Students must request their guest tickets by Friday, April 10th. To request tickets, contact the UM Box Office by email (umbo@olemiss.edu) or phone (662-915-7411) and be sure to include any necessary ADA accommodations for guests. If preferred, students may also visit the Box Office on the first floor of the Ford Center Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to obtain their tickets.

Any remaining tickets after April 10th will be made available on a first come basis. Further instructions will be sent via email on April 20th.

Each guest must present a printed ticket for entry into the Ford Center, with the exception of guests age 2 and under. Graduates must distribute their tickets obtained from the UM Box office to their guests prior to graduation. Graduates will be seated on the stage and do not need a ticket.

May 16, 2026: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Training at Jackson Avenue Center

Learn how to recognize and respond to common medical crises until medical personnel can arrive. Instructor Stephen Bruckner will teach you first aid basics as well as steps for identifying and addressing issues requiring CPR or the use of an AED (automatic external defibrillator). It is important that everyone is empowered to help someone in need but this training is especially important for caregivers and group leaders. Completion of the one-day class also earns participants CPR certification at no additional cost.

In the middle grades, students build upon their understanding of number and begin to develop their ability to think statistically. This process includes understanding variability and making sense of and interpreting data representations. Engaging students in statistical investigations provides them with experiences with analyzing, producing, and interpreting data. Introduction to theoretical probability models and empirical probability approximation provides middle grades students with the foundation for statistical inference vital to more advanced mathematical and scientific understandings.
